Definition of olericulture

Olericulture is one of the most important branch of horticulture. The word olericulture comes from the Latin word “Oleris” means pot herb and “cultura” means cultivation. So, literally olericulture is the cultivation of pot herb.
Broadly, olericulture may be defined as a branch of horticulture which deals with the genesis, morphological feature, nomenclature, propagation, production, improvement, harvesting, processing, preservation, merchandizing etc. vegetable crops.

Definition of vegetable

It is very difficult task to define vegetables. Many of horticulturists defined it many ways. The accepted definition of vegetable is as follows-
Vegetable may be defined as the herbaceous plants whose vegetative or reproductive parts are eaten or consumed in unripe or green stage or by cooking. Generally, vegetables are consumed by cooking. It may be annual, biennial or perennial in nature. Naturally fruits are not eaten or consumed by cooking.

Difference between fruit and vegetable

1.Fruit plants are generally perennials, except; Strawberry, gooseberry etc.
1.Most vegetables are annuals
2. Fruit plants are generally asexually propagated
2.Mostly sexually propagated
3.They require special practices like training, pruning etc.
3. Cultivation is seasonal and special techniques like pruning, training etc. are generally not required.
4.Plants are generally are woody
4.Plants are generally non-woody
5. Only fruits are edible, but sometimes false fruit (e.g. fleshy thalamus of apple) also edible.
5. All parts of the plants are edible.
6. Generally, fruits are consumed as raw materials.
6. Generally, vegetables are consumed as after cooking.
