Definition and types of tractor

What is tractor? 

A tractor is a self-propelled machine, used either for pulling or pushing Loads or for stationary belt work.

Types of tractor:

(a). General-purpose tractor. 

Used for tillage, road construction, crop harvesting.

(b). Row crop tractor.

Used as the planting of row crops and control of weeds between the row.

(c). Orchard type tractor.

Used in the large garden.

(d). Garden type tractor.

Garden tractor with one or two forward speeds and reverse are best suited for small fields. This tractor is also known as power tillers and has drawn the attention of Bangladeshi farmers and engineers for use in the farm operation.

(e). Industrial tractor.

Used seaport, airport and road construction (Bulldozer). Also, tractor may be classified as-

1. Wheel type of tractor.

Used for agricultural works.

2. Crawler type tractor.

Used for industrial works.

How to select a tractor?

Selection of a tractor:

In selecting a tractor for farm operations, one must decide what size tractor one has to buy, from where and why.

(a). Making a selection based on the size of tractor:

Before deciding the tractor size, one must consider the major types of farm work the tractor will be accepted to perform most of the time. If it mostly has to do the tillage operations, its size should be based on the size of the plough to complete in the cropping season.

(b). Making a selection based on the type of tractor:

The choice of a particular type of a tractor is based on the job it is expected to do most of the time. Some of the important points which are given consideration in selecting the type are – Ground clearance, Tread spacing, Operator’s visibility, Speeds, and maneuverability.

(c). Making a selection based on construction features:

  • Frequency of starting the engine.
  • Fuel economy.
  • Flexibility of power.
  • Size of the engine.

(d). Making a selection based on operating equipment to be used:

  • Operation of expected working implements.
  • Operative control of expected implements.

(e). Making a selection based on suppliers and the availability of spare parts:

This point is particularly important in Bangladesh where most tractor parts are still imported. If there is more than one dependable decelerate available in the nearby town, the choice will normally go to one who supplies tractors from the most reputed manufacturer. Also, it is beneficial, whenever one needs a new piece of equipment, to take advice from someone who is better informed about it. It is always better to consult an unbiased man than otherwise.

(f). Making a selection based on fuel used:

Though the initial cost of a diesel tractor is greater than that of the vaporizing one for the same size, if it is constantly used throughout the year, the diesel tractor will be economical to operate in the long run. This is because the specific fuel consumption of the diesel engines is the mechanism.

(g).Making a selection based on convenience:

For easy operation and better, convenience wheeled tractor and PTO operated tractor are selected.

What are the points for the purchases of a tractor?

Points for purchases of a tractor:

  • Trademark.
  • Trade name.
  • Models
  • Repair and maintenance facilities.
  • Ease of operation.
  • Ease of adjustment.
  • Availability to work and condition.
  • Quick change of units.
  • Maneuverability.
  • Comfort power requirement.
  • Cost of operation.
  • Initial cost.
  • Years of services expected and whether the purchase of the equipment is economical in relation to the size of the farm and the work to be performed by the equipment.
  • Availability of spare parts.

The function of a tractor:

1.Tractor help to pull any machine or implements.

2. It helps to push any implements.

3. Tractor is so much used in a farm for cultivation transportation etc.

4. It is easy for farm operation and its requirements.
