Nursery bed
A nursery bed is a place of high land for raising seedlings and is made with pillar bricks and furrows. It is just like a seedbed. This place is selected for the planting of cutting, layers, grafts instead of seed sowing.
Preparation of nursery bed
For the raising of seedlings, two types of nursery bed are prepared in the nursery.
- Bed for the direct raising of the seedlings.
- Bed for rising of seedlings in the poly bags.
1. Bed for the direct raising of seedlings:
At first, it is important to select a suitable site for a commercial nursery before going to prepare it. land should be prepared for making a bed. For this, the land is to be plowed and the grasses arc to be rooted out, and the debris should be removed down the clods. If the soil is bad for making a nursery bed, then fertile soil brought out from another location may be mixed with it thoroughly.
So, one cubic meter (m3) cow dung or compost is required for each of 10 square meters of nursery bed, and 1.5 kg of urea, TSP, and MP at the ratio of 4:2:3 are mixed with the soil of the bed. The surface of the land is to be leveled.
The bed should be a height of 10 to 15 cm by making furrows/drain in and around the bed. The edge of the bed is to be bounded. Post of wood or bamboo with a 30 to 35 cm height is to be settled down vertically to the soil around the bed. Therefore, the branches of bamboos to be attached to the post. The edge of the bed can also be made with bricks.
2. Bed for rising seedling in polybag:
The land must not be plowed in terms of the polybag. The surface layer is to be leveled by earthing up of soil in the middle portion of two beds with a height of 10 to 15 cm. The edge is made up of a bed. The edge of the bed can be made with bricks or bamboo.
